HealthTrust has always been dedicated to ecological
responsibility. For example, one of the forerunners of
our formal Sustainability program is a longstanding
commitment to the advancement of
reprocessing/remanufacturing of medical devices—reducing
both the environmental and economic impact on our member
facilities.
Our program today touches on many dimensions of social
responsibility including facilities management,
environmental purchasing, waste management, clean
energy, chemicals management and much more. We care
about our planet and support our members’ eco-friendly
practices.
HealthTrust is a full member of Practice Greenhealth,
the leading advocacy group in this arena, and we
participate in initiatives led by Health Care Without
Harm and other environmental-interest groups.

At the heart of HealthTrust’s sustainability initiative
is our Environmentally Preferable Purchasing program
that factors ecological stewardship into product
sourcing and procurement. To be considered, products
must be items of high quality and functionality that do
not contribute to other negative health issues and are
made by manufacturers committed to reducing waste
throughout a product’s life cycle. They must be
sustainable, readily available and reasonably priced.

The implementation of HealthTrust’s formal
Sustainability program led to our receiving the
Champion for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth
at the CleanMed 2009 International Conference. Presented
during our first year of eligibility, the honor has
spurred us on to even greater progress in this vital
area.
The Association of Medical Device Reprocessors (AMDR)
presented HealthTrust with its annual Clinical Best
Practices Award for our use of regulated
reprocessing as a best practice, and for our ongoing
efforts to support the financial and environmental
sustainability of its GPO membership.
